The Joint Distribution Committee

Joint Distribution Committee

I grew up hearing about “the Joint,” and couldn't initially figure out how some speakeasy was able to do so much good for Jews worldwide! Since 1914, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) has served as the overseas arm of the American Jewish community. Its mission is to serve the needs of Jews throughout the world, particularly where their lives as Jews are threatened or made difficult. JDC also helps to rescue Jews in peril, and saved 15,000 Ethiopian Jews in the 1990’s. It provides critical help to Israel, particularly with vulnerable populations, including children-at-risk, immigrants, the elderly and the disabled.

Since the fall of communist regimes in Europe, JDC has been helping Jewish communities rediscover their heritage and rebuild a vibrant Jewish communal life. In times of crisis – natural disasters, war, famine – JDC offers aid to non-Jews to fulfill the Jewish tenets of tikkun olam and mipnei darkei shalom, the moral responsibility to repair the world, alleviate suffering, and foster peace, wherever and however we can.
